On 9th January, 1915, the 3rd Rifle Brigade battalion of 17 Brigade, 6th Division moved into the front line near La Chapelle Armentières, a sector of the Western Front where they spent most of that that winter. They were relieved on 13th January but the Battalion Diary has little information about their time spent here but it can be assumed that it was cold and wet and that they were subjected to regular periods of shell fire and the attention of enemy snipers. Patrols would have been sent out into no-man’s-land most nights and that there would have been casualties such as William Turner who died from wounds on 13th January. |
